Choosing the Best Baby Humidifier for a Nursery: a 5-Minute Guide

If you are setting up a nursery for your baby, we know you want your child to be as comfortable and healthy as possible, which means you have surely considered buying a humidifier for the baby’s room. Perhaps you haven’t purchased one yet because you are unclear on what a humidifier does, or you are unsure of its benefits for the infants or don’t know how to choose the right one.  We understand you are still undecided, that’s why we have created this handy guide to help. So, let’s get started with the basics recommendations, including how to decide whether or not your baby needs a humidifier, and if so, how to choose the best one. What Do Humidifiers Do for Babies The main task of a humidifier is to vapor water into the air. That way, you can increase the moisture in your home during winter months when humidity levels are usually below average. A Humidifier for Your Nursery: a Good Idea To understand whether or not your child needs a humidifier in his room, take a moment to answer these questions: Does your child often cough, have colds and flu? Has sleeping problems? Does your baby often get tired for no reason? Has dry skin during winter? If you’ve answered “yes” to at least one question, getting a humidifier is recommended. Numerous studies prove the efficiency of having a humidifier in a nursery. Here are a few advantages for your child: The quality of sleep will be better by relieving stress on your baby’s sinuses Your child will have fewer colds and no stuffy nose because of higher moisture in the home A humidifier makes it easier for a child to breathe by relieving lung tension. What are the benefits of a cool-mist humidifier? Read an article ‘Reasons to use a humidifier’ The protection against dry air is one of the most important benefits of having a humidifier in the child’s room. This is especially true in the winter months. In this season air tends to become dry from your heating system robbing the natural moisture in it.  Babies easily fall prey to infections and sicknesses. It happens because they are much more susceptible to congestion. A humidifier adds moisture to the air and creates optimal breathing conditions, allowing your baby to sleep comfortably and loosen the build-up of mucus. A humidifier also helps relieve your baby of irritated, dry skin. And it is the best pros of a cool-mist humidifier for the child’s room. Baby’s skin is sensitive to dry climates and can result in red patches and tender, chapped lips. The dry air may also be aggravating to common skin conditions, such as eczema. By using a humidifier, the skin remains soft and clear by retaining its natural moistness. Another benefit of a humidifier in the nursery is the white noise it provides.  Not only will it help to drown out household noises like dogs, television, and kids playing, but it will also help lull baby into a peaceful sleep. Pros and Cons of Humidifier in Baby Room A cool-mist humidifier for the nursery is a good idea if your baby has problems with sleep, skin, and well-being. There are 6 pros and cons of a cool-mist humidifier that are necessary to know. Soothes and Eases Dry Air Symptoms Dry air can cause a lot of problems, but humidifiers will help to resolve them easily. Dry sinuses, bloody noses, and cracked lips are no longer a problem if you pick a right cool mist humidifier for your household.  It can also ease cold, allergy and asthma symptoms because of increased humidity levels. Humidifier Must be Refilled Frequently A humidifier needs regular maintenance for it. What does it mean? You should refill and clean your humidifier regularly. Furniture Last Longer Everyone knows that dry air can be harmful to wood furniture. Therefore,  the right humidity levels in your home can also increase the life of fixtures in your home. Especially wood furniture and wallpaper, which can suffer ill effects if kept in an environment that is too dry. Condensation The wrong humidifier’s setting or for too long usage through the day which causes overly high humidity levels in your home. Such a problem is named condensation, which triggers the growth of bacteria, dust mites and mold. These microorganisms can increase allergy and asthma problems. Microorganisms Bacteria and other microorganisms can multiply on the moist surfaces of a humidifier and in the water tank.  And then a humidifier disperses them into the air. But, calm down. You can prevent such a problem. Just keep your humidifier clean. Maintain it daily and weekly as directed in your humidifier owner’s manual. White Dust Ultrasonic humidifiers can disperse fine, white dust in the room the humidifier is placed in. It is because of mineral deposits and other impurities in the water. Using distilled water reduces or eliminates the dust. Where to place a cool-mist humidifier in the baby’s room Select a location where the baby can’t reach the humidifier or pull the electric cord on the device. Do not place your humidifier on the floor. The higher the humidifier is placed the better. It produces a mist that has to get mixed with the air. When the item is placed on the floor the mist has no chance to get mixed and it causes wet floors. Try to put it on the nightstand or a table. How to Choose the Right Humidifier for a Baby’s Room There are a lot of humidifiers on the market. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the choices. However, to make it easier, here are things top rated humidifier should have to be safe for a child. Choosing the Best Type of Humidifier Having a humidifier at home or the office is a huge trend these days. Manufacturers understand the benefits and their popularity and dozens of new models have started to appear on the market. Choosing the best one is harder than ever. Here are some tips to help you sort through all the options to choose the best fit. Generally, all humidifiers fall into one of two categories: they are either cool mist or warm mist. Here’s why a lot of people might choose warm mist humidifiers: they are normally cheaper; warm mist humidifiers are quieter than some cool mist ones; warm mist humidifiers are known to be easy to use. Still, their major flaw is a huge potential for burns. There’s hot water in the humidifier and that’s how soothing mist is produced. So, if a humidifier falls or the water spills out, your baby can get burned. It might not be highly likely to happen but why should we take the risk when it comes to our children? For that very reason, most parents choose a cool-mist humidifier. Here the safety risks have been taken into account so that burns are no longer a concern. Keep in mind: a cool-mist humidifier needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent mold and bacteria. Otherwise, your baby will be breathing in microbes and you’ll be doing way more harm than good. Ultrasonic Over Evaporative Before we get to explaining why one is a better fit for children or newborn babies than the other one, it’s only logical to explain the difference between the two technologies. Evaporative humidifier – traditional technology. The gist of this technology is using fan-aided evaporation to turn water into the air. There’s a filter that sucks in the air thus increasing humidity in the room. One of the major advantages of evaporative humidifiers is no white dust since they have a filter. However, there are still a few important drawbacks worth mentioning. Evaporative humidifiers require more space; This type of humidifier is usually louder. As some babies are pretty sensitive to noise, your child might wake up or not be able to fall asleep with the added noise of a humidifier in the room. Evaporative humidifiers use more energy than ultrasonic ones. Is It Safe to Use Humidifier in Baby Room Ultrasonic Humidifier – a Modern Advancement Ultrasonic humidifiers are most parents’ favorite choice. Why? Let’s get into the details. How does an ultrasonic humidifier work? There’s a small plate vibrating on frequencies a human ear cannot detect to break the drops of water into a mist that later disperses in the air. Thanks to this advanced technology, ultrasonic humidifiers are usually quiet. Ultrasonic humidifiers have a lot of advantages over evaporative ones. To name but a few: An ultrasonic humidifier uses less electricity than an evaporative one; To make sure a child doesn’t isn’t disturbed during his sleep, a parent’s wise choice would also be an ultrasonic humidifier; An ultrasonic humidifier runs for more hours than an evaporative one. Note, however, that an ultrasonic humidifier is filter-free. That’s why you should use distilled water instead of tap water – to prevent white dust from being produced. No one wants his baby to breathe in dangerous substances, right? A Few Quick Care Tips Use distilled instead of tap water. That way, you don’t risk the development of mold, bacteria, and white dust inside of a humidifier. Clean a humidifier every day (especially if you bought a cool-mist one). Otherwise, your child will breathe in bacteria that’ll weaken his immune system. Don’t use sharp objects to clean a humidifier as you can damage it and cause water leaks in the future. Make sure you clean all the parts of a humidifier – the base and the tank. You should definitely know how to clean and maintain the humidifier. To get more information you can read an article ‘How to clean a humidifier’ Choosing the Size of a Humidifier All humidifiers are grouped into three categories by size: Small; Medium; Large. Choosing the right one is determined by the size of a room where you plan to use a humidifier. Now, how do you know whether your nursery is small, medium, or large? Here are the guidelines: A small room is up to 155 sq. ft.; A medium room’s area is up to 300 sq. ft; A large room has an area of up to 500 sq. ft. Wrapping Things Up When you go shopping for a humidifier, check with the manufacturer whether a particular model is baby-proof. By that, we mean: Quiet: can your baby sleep with no disturbances? Safe from burns: is there a risk of water spilling, leaking, etc? Has an automatic shut-off feature: when there’s no water in a humidifier, it must shut down by itself as your child can’t do it and you might not always be around; Quite often, manufacturers create one or two humidifiers specifically for children. At least, that’s what we did with our 3L ultrasonic humidifier. Geniani humidifiers are considered extremely children-friendly. Cool mist evaporative humidifiers use an inner wick filter to absorb water. Meanwhile, a fan blows the air through the filter causing evaporation of water throughout your room. However, the disadvantage of cool mist evaporative humidifiers is noise. Since these devices use fans, they can be slightly noisier than ultrasonic humidifiers. When it comes to choosing the best humidifier, some expert reviewers place ultrasonic models at the top of their lists. By the way, ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers are best used to fight allergies and flu symptoms. Warm Mist Humidifier Warm mist humidifiers are designed to create warm moisture from heated water. Because this type of humidifier functions with warm water instead of cold, it can fight off any bacteria or mold that may start to grow or develop in parts of the humidifier. Types of Warm Mist Humidifiers Warm mist humidifiers use an inner heating element. It boils water before releasing into your environment as an invisible mist. These types are often considered healthier since the boiling process kills waterborne bacteria and mold. Which prevents them from entering the air you breathe. The absence of an internal fan makes warm mist humidifiers exceptionally quiet to operate. Warm mist humidifiers are also available in ultrasonic models.   Warm mist humidifiers are not as well-suited for large areas as cool mist models. On the other hand, these humidifiers work best in smaller areas like bedrooms and offices. The problem, however, with buying products to protect our wood is that they often give off harmful fumes, familiar scents that are actually damaging our health as we breathe them in. But, we have a genius solution which is safe even for your kids! Dry air can also cause damage to wood furniture, drying it out and making it crack. A humidifier, when used properly, can ensure that the wood features in your home and furniture will look their best. From preventing illnesses to preventing static, from helping your hair to look better to saving warm in your home, a humidifier is a tool that is very useful, especially during the dry winter months. Prevent Dry Skin As everyone knows,  50–60% of the human body is made of water. Therefore,  dry conditions may pull moisture out leaving behind dry skin, chapped lips and so on. Our bodies rely on the correct amount of water to feel good.  Lips and eyes also show irritation when not properly hydrated. By using a humidifier in winter, the skin remains soft and clear by retaining its natural moistness. Another benefit of a humidifier in the nursery is the white noise it provides.  Not only will it help to drown out household noises like dogs, television, and kids playing, but it will also help lull baby into a peaceful sleep. More information about dry skin and humidifier you can read here ‘Are humidifiers good for skin’ Helps Your Home Feel Warmer Did you know that humidified air may actually feel warmer than dry air? Studies have shown that this happens because of the fact that with more water in the air, sweat evaporates more slowly, leaving people feeling warmer. As a result, homeowners may be able to save on their heating bills. Healthier Houseplants Plants help pull toxins out of the air. But they can suffer in dry, winter air. Have you noticed that the soil is dryer than usual? Are the leaves looking droopy and sick? If you are growing plants in areas with a high level of sunlight and low humidity, you certainly need to increase the moisture in the air and the best way to do that is to get any of the best plant humidifiers.  A cool-mist humidifier can help keep your houseplants healthy—which helps keep you healthy, too! Improve Sleep Unhealthy daytime habits and lifestyle choices can leave you tossing and turning at night and adversely affect your mood, brain and heart health, immune system, creativity, vitality, and weight. Adding humidity to the air by running a humidifier at night may help to relieve some symptoms and improve the quality of sleep. A moist environment also tends to feel warmer and more comfortable, which can encourage a good night’s sleep. White Noise Another benefit of a humidifier especially in the nursery is the white noise it provides.  Not only will it help to drown out household noises like dogs, television, and kids playing, but it will also help lull baby into a peaceful sleep. White noise is proven by scientists to help with sleeping issues. Not for everyone, certainly, but for most people. The technical definition is that white noise is created by equally distributed frequencies. To make it simpler, white noise is formed by an equal amount at every frequency that can be heard by a human – from low to high. ENJOY THE SPECIAL BENEFITS FOR OUR ENGAGED BLOG READERS! Lower back pain treatment and relief: lower back exercises and stretches

Lower back pain treatment and relief: lower back exercises and stretches

Almost everyone has low back pain at some point. It is a universal human experience. The low back supports the weight of the upper body. It also provides mobility for everyday motions. Muscles in the low back are responsible for flexing and rotating the hips while walking. Nerves in the low back supply sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet. The lower back, which usually starts below the ribcage, is the lumbar region. Pain here can be intense. It is one of the top causes of missed work.  Lower back pain is a severe problem. Fortunately, such pain often gets better on its own. When it doesn’t, there are effective treatments.   Different Types of Lower Back Pain The two most common types of lower back pain are mechanical and radicular pain. Mechanical Pain It comes primarily from the muscles, ligaments, joints, or bones in and around the spine. This type of pain tends to be localized to the lower back. Sometimes it is localized in the top of the legs. It is usually influenced by loading the spine. Radicular Pain Such type of lower back pain can occur if a spinal nerve root becomes impinged or inflamed. This type of pain may follow a nerve root pattern. Moreover, it can radiate down into the buttock and leg. As a rule, the radicular type is associated with sharp, electric, burning-types of pain. It can be associated with numbness or weakness and typically felt on only one side of the body. Acute Pain This type of pain typically comes on suddenly and lasts for a few days or weeks, and is considered a normal response of the body to injury or tissue damage. The pain gradually subsides as the body heals. Subacute Low Back Pain Lasting between 6 weeks and 3 months, this type of pain is usually mechanical (such as a muscle strain or joint pain) but is prolonged. At this point, a medical workup may be considered and is advisable if the pain is severe and limits one’s ability to participate in activities of daily living, sleeping, and working. Chronic Back Pain Usually defined as lower back pain that lasts over 3 months, this type of pain is usually severe, does not respond to initial treatments, and requires a thorough medical workup to determine the exact source of the pain. There are many additional sources of pain including claudication pain, neuropathic pain, deformity, tumors, infections, and pain from inflammatory conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis). Also, they include pain that originates from another part of the body and presents in the lower back. For example, kidney stones or ulcerative colitis. It is also possible to have lower back pain without any definitive causes. When this happens, the primary focus is on treating the symptoms and the patient’s overall health. Symptoms can be experienced in several ways. For example: dull or achy pain; stinging, burning pain; muscle spasms and tightness in the low back, pelvis, or hips; pain that worsens after long periods of sitting or standing; unable to stand up straight, not able to walk or run without pain.   How to Get Relief from Lower Back Pain Back pain due to muscle strain will usually get better on its own, but you can take steps to make yourself more comfortable. Usually, people who suffer from lower back pain don’t even want to get out of bed. But it isn’t the best solution! Be Active For such cases, doctors recommend returning to your normal activities as soon as possible. Studies suggest that any more than a day or two of bed rest can make the pain worse. Also, it may reduce muscle tone and flexibility. So, don’t lead a couch potato lifestyle. Massage One more way to prevent low back pain is a massage. It may relieve chronic low back pain. Especially when combined with exercise and stretching. A heating pad or warm baths may provide temporary pain relief too. Sleep Did you know that two-thirds of people with chronic back pain suffer from some type of sleep disorder? Paradoxically, inadequate sleep can make your back pain worse. Therefore, the quality of sleep is extremely important for those who suffer from any types of pain. Medical Treatment It is also a way to get pain relief for lower back pain. Drugs as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve), might relieve acute back pain. But you should take these medications only as directed by your doctor. Heat and Cold Therapy Sometimes the basics are the best. Especially, if we are talking about natural pain relief. The temperature change from hot to cold and back again triggers anti-inflammatory heat-shock and cold-shock proteins. So, the compression decreases blood flow to injuries. It keeps inflammation and swelling down. Alternating cold and heat are also effective. Heating Pad for Back Pain There are a lot of good home remedies for lower back pain relief. But the most effective and helpful is the heating pad. It comes in various shapes and sizes, with different heat setting options. The heating pad we are featuring is our Geniani heating pad with three heat settings: low, medium, and high. For pain anywhere in the back, you will need to lie down flat on a hard surface to come into full contact with the heating pad. Choose the highest heat setting for this treatment. Always make sure to use a towel or clothing between your skin and the heating pad to avoid burns. Place the heating pad on the painful area and try to rest calmly for 5-10 minutes. It will help you to ease sore muscle and lower back pain. Can you sleep with a heating pad? Read more information about that in our article ‘Sleeping with a heating pad on the back’ Lower Back Pain Relief Stretches and Exercises at Home You may feel like resting, but moving is good for your back. Exercises for lower back pain can strengthen the back, stomach, and leg muscles. They help support your spine, relieving back pain. Always ask your health care professional before doing any exercise for back pain. Partial Crunches Lie with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Cross arms over your chest or puts hands behind your neck. Tighten stomach muscles and raise your shoulders off the floor.  Breathe out as you raise your shoulders. Important: don’t lead with your elbows or use arms to pull your neck off the floor.  Wall Sits Stand 9-12 inches from the wall, then lean back until your back is flat against the wall. Slowly slide down, pressing your lower back into the wall. Hold for as much s possible.  Aerobic Exercise Walking, swimming, and biking may help reduce back pain. Start with short sessions and build up over time. If back pain doesn’t go away for more than two months, yoga can help. In one study, people who took yoga classes had fewer symptoms of low back pain than people who were given a book about care for back pain. There are some useful and helpful exercises to prevent lower back pain.  Lower Back Pain Treatment at Home As you can see, it is possible to cope with such pain at home. A doctor may recommend physical therapy, medication, or other treatments. People who have existing health conditions or who take regular medications should speak to a doctor before trying any herbs or supplements. ENJOY THE SPECIAL BENEFITS FOR OUR ENGAGED BLOG READERS! But how protect yourself from such unpleasant disease? Stress Stress is a normal human experience. It is a natural reaction to potentially dangerous situations. When you perceive a threat or a serious challenge, chemicals and hormones surge throughout your body. Too much constant stress can have negative effects on your long-term health. Fortunately, stress isn’t a bad thing all the time. For example, your wedding day or some other “huge day” of your life is a good form of stress. It won’t impact your health in harmful ways. On the other hand, prolonged stress can be extremely harmful for your health! Types of Stress There are several different types of stress. Each has its own characteristics, symptoms, duration, and treatment approaches. Let’s look at each one. Acute Stress It is one of the most popular and common types of stress. Several research studies show that 45% of people cope with acute stress. Fortunately, acute stress symptoms are recognized by most people. It’s the kind of stress you might feel when you escape a car accident. Acute stress may be caused by such routine everyday things like the loss of an important contract, a child’s occasional problems at school, problems at work, petty quarrels with family, and so on. Luckily, it is highly treatable and manageable. Moreover, it is less harmful for your health than the other types of stress. Episodic Acute Stress Episodic acute stress is when you have frequent periods of acute stress. Do you often feel anxious and worried about things you suspect may happen? It is likely that you have experienced episodic acute stress. People who have episodic acute stress are always in a hurry. They tend to be abrupt, and sometimes their irritability comes across as hostility. The symptoms of episodic acute stress are headaches and migraines, hypertension, chest pain, and heart disease. Treating episodic acute stress has different levels and steps which generally require professional help. The treatment may take a few months. Chronic Stress If acute stress can be exciting and in most ways good, chronic stress is not. Chronic stress destroys bodies, minds, and lives. When does chronic stress come? When a person never sees a way out of a miserable situation. Some chronic stresses stem from traumatic, early childhood experiences. The worst aspect of chronic stress is that people get used to it. They don’t even recognize it, therefore they don’t treat it the right way. It may contribute to anxiety and depression. Cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system are also common. Chronic stress can also lead to sleep difficulties. Stress Symptoms Did you know that 80 percent of Americans experience at least one symptom of stress? Twenty percent reported being under extreme stress in the past month.  So, let’s figure out the most common symptoms of stress. If you are under stress you may deal with chronic pain, or sleep problems like insomnia. Also you may experience digestive problems, overeating, or lack of appetite. Moreover you may notice difficulty concentrating and making decisions as well as fatigue. You may feel overwhelmed, irritable, or fearful. You may be drinking or smoking more than you used to. Stress Relief. Stress Management In order to manage your stress, first you have to identify the things that cause you stress. Figure out which of these things can be avoided. Then, find ways to cope with those negative stressors that can’t be avoided.   Sure, stress is a normal part of life. But, too much of it is clearly harmful to your physical and mental well-being. Fortunately, there are many ways to manage stress. Nowadays, it is possible to get effective treatments for both anxiety and depression that may be connected with it.Here are some useful ways to start managing stress: Start leading a healthier lifestyle; Sleep at least 7-8 hours each night; Start exercising or playing sports regularly; Minimize your use of caffeine; Avoid drinking alcohol; Stay socially connected; Always set aside time for rest and relaxation; Learn meditation techniques such as deep breathing; Start to attend yoga classes (it is extremely useful and may help you calm down and relax).
